The BRTA Digital Number Plate is an innovative upgrade to the traditional number plates on vehicles in Bangladesh. It features a combination of modern technology and security features, enabling better vehicle tracking, easier identification, and enhanced overall safety. These digital plates are designed to replace the conventional metal or plastic number plates that have been used for decades, offering a more reliable and dynamic solution.

Unlike the old-fashioned plates, the BRTA digital number plates are equipped with electronic chips and QR codes that store vital vehicle information. The system also includes features like real-time tracking and automated updates to enhance law enforcement capabilities.

The BRTA digital number plates are integrated with a state-of-the-art electronic system that communicates with the central vehicle database maintained by the BRTA. Once a vehicle is registered, the digital plate is linked with the vehicle’s unique identification code in the database.

The QR code on the digital number plate can be scanned at any point, instantly retrieving the vehicle details, such as its owner, registration date, and insurance validity. Law enforcement can also use automated systems to detect violations like expired registration or illegal modifications to the vehicle.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority officials expressed hope that digital number plates would be available on all vehicles within a year, though they said this would mostly depend on the professionalism of their staff. On a daily basis, they expect to install digital number plates on 1000 to 1500 motor vehicles.

In addition, the government has already made retro-reflective number plates mandatory for all existing vehicles. For motorcycles and three-wheelers, a pair of digital number plates costs Tk 1805. Tk 3,652 is the fee for a pair of digital number plates for heavy, medium vehicles such as buses, minibuses, trucks, and cars. Motorcycle fees were fixed at Tk 1850. BRAC Bank, South East Bank, and United Commercial Bank will accept deposits for digital number plates.

Digital number plates from the BRTA (Bangladesh Road Transport Authority) are generally processed within a few weeks or months after the initial application and payment.
There are several steps involved in this process, including registration, collecting biometric data, and fabricating and delivering the number plate.

The BRTA has installed Automated Number Plate Production Cells (ANPC) in several cities, including:

  • Dhaka
  • Chattogram
  • Khulna
  • Rajshahi
  • Sylhet
  • Barisal

In these centers, RFID-embedded plates and the latest printing technology are used.

As per BRTA regulations, the following vehicle categories must use digital number plates:

  • All vehicles registered after October 2012
  • Vehicles with updated ownership transfers
  • Re-registered or imported second-hand vehicles
  • Commercial and private cars
  • Motorcycles of 100cc and above
  • CNG auto-rickshaws

  • Enhanced Security: It helps reduce vehicle theft, cloning, and unauthorized usage.
  • Traffic Management: Authorities can monitor and trace vehicles in real-time using RFID scanning.
  • Transparent Ownership: Ownership records are instantly verifiable in the BRTA system.
  • Toll & Tax Automation: Toll booths and tax gates can automatically process payments via RFID.
  • Legal Compliance: It ensures your vehicle adheres to modern registration standards in Bangladesh.

  • Enhanced Security: One of the biggest advantages of the digital number plates is the security they offer. The electronic chips embedded in the plate contain encrypted data, making it nearly impossible to forge or tamper with. This significantly reduces the risk of vehicle-related crimes, such as illegal registration and theft.
  • Real-Time Tracking: The BRTA digital number plate enables authorities to track vehicles in real-time, ensuring better monitoring of traffic and compliance with road laws. This can also be valuable for law enforcement agencies in cases of theft or accidents.
  • Quick Registration: The new system facilitates faster and more efficient vehicle registration. By incorporating advanced technology, the BRTA has streamlined the process, making it more convenient for both vehicle owners and regulatory authorities.
  • QR Code Integration: Each BRTA digital number plate comes with a unique QR code, which can be scanned by mobile devices or specialized systems at checkposts. This code provides instant access to vehicle details, including registration information, insurance status, and roadworthiness.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Unlike traditional metal or plastic plates, the digital number plates are made using more sustainable materials, contributing to a greener, more eco-friendly solution for vehicle registration.

BRTA Digital Number Plates incorporate electronic chips and QR codes to store vehicle information for easier tracking and identification.

Enhanced vehicle security is achieved by encrypting the digital number plate, making it difficult to tamper with or forge.

When registering or renewing a vehicle’s registration, owners can obtain the digital number plate from official BRTA registration centers.

The BRTA Digital Number Plate is a revolutionary step forward for Bangladesh’s vehicle identification system. By incorporating advanced technology, enhanced security, and improved tracking capabilities, it offers significant benefits for both vehicle owners and regulatory authorities. This innovative system is poised to drive the country towards a smarter, safer, and more efficient future in transportation
